The Supreme Court ruled Monday that President Donald Trump does not have the authority to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook from the central bank for now. However, this view leaves open the possibility of his removal from office in the future. The court did not rule on whether Trump would have the authority to fire Cook or any other Fed member. Instead, the 5-4 decision rejected Trump’s bid to pause a lower federal court ruling that blocked his termination over his lawsuit challenging his termination benefits. Trump had claimed that he wanted to fire Cook over allegations that Cook committed mortgage fraud, but Cook flatly denied this.
