Wimbledon 2026: Serena Williams injures knee and a doubt to play doubles with sister Venus

Missing out on the doubles would be a hugely disappointing end to Williams’ highly anticipated return to the All England Club.

The American superstar has been in the spotlight at SW19 for the past few days, with high levels of intrigue emerging as to why he is returning and what he will look like on the pitch.

Williams played what she thought would be the last match of her career at the 2022 US Open but refused to use the word ‘retirement’ and instead said she was “walking away” from tennis.

He returned to Center Court on Tuesday after 1,462 days away from Wimbledon.

Williams showed signs of her unique talent where she won seven singles titles and six doubles titles and could pull off a sensational win against the 20-year-old Joint.

However, Joint insisted on claiming a 6-3 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 victory.

However, Williams’ fight and determination as he sought to satisfy an insatiable appetite to beat his opponents (he famously said he hated losing more than winning) may have come at a bitter price.

Sources told BBC Sport that Williams suffered a knee injury in the first set and continued playing, pushing Joint all the way, despite being advised not to continue.

After the game, Williams’ knee was swollen and medical staff offered crutches to help him walk, but Williams is said to have refused.

Williams has yet to rule out whether she is fit enough to play on Friday – but indications are that she is in serious danger of making another emotional appearance on Center Court with sister Venus.
