In Atlanta: Harry Kane scored twice in the final 15 minutes to help England progress to the last 16 of the World Cup as they held on late to beat a stubborn Democratic Republic of Congo 2-1 on Wednesday.
Kane produced another match-winning performance for his country after England trailed in a tightly-fought game that lasted more than an hour, with the captain equalizing with a header in the 75th minute and then heading home a stunning winner four minutes later.
Brian Cipenga gave the Congolese a shocking seventh-minute lead before Kane showed off his heroics to save his side from an ignominious defeat.
Enjoying overwhelming support from the crowd of 68,239, England needed all the patience and determination they could muster to avoid what would be one of the biggest upsets of the tournament and now head to Mexico City to play hosts Mexico on Sunday.
Cipenga unleashed a powerful right-foot shot from a tight angle, beating Jordan Pickford at the near post after being left unmarked on the left wing. Congo captain Chancel Mbemba’s long ball looped past Noah Sadiki and defender Djed Spence, allowing the 28-year-old to put the Congolese ahead with his first international goal.
