Democratic lawmakers said they still believe the United States is an extraordinary country, despite voicing their differences with President Donald Trump when asked by Fox News Digital if they were proud to be American citizens.

“The fact that everyone should be able to move forward for themselves and their families based on the freedoms that we have and the laws that we occasionally enforce makes sense across the board,” said Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wisc.

The responses, coming ahead of the nation’s 250th Independence Day celebrations, underscore Democrats’ deep distrust of the administration’s leadership, even as they express confidence in the principles that make America’s prosperity possible.

Only one of them, Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, refused to explain why he was proud to be an American.

When asked if he was proud to be an American, Green said, “I am very proud to tell you that impeachment is an option to remove a reckless, ruthless, lawless president.”

“I’m proud that this exists,” Green added.

Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas, echoed his sentiments.

“I believe Americans are ready to defend our democracy and oppose authoritarianism so that we can celebrate our 251st anniversary in this country, rather than cede all power to a so-called king,” Doggett said. he said.

Doggett explained that despite his disagreements with the Trump administration, his views differ from his feelings about the nation.

“We’re the greatest country in the world. We’re innovative, we’re smart, we make sure we uphold our values, our freedoms, our justice and our freedom. We’re always trying to perfect our union, but we were also the great experiment in democracy, and that was an exciting success,” Doggett said. he said.

Rep. Shri Thanedar, D-Mich. Like other Democrats, they agreed on U.S. exceptionalism.

Thanedar said, “This is a great country. As you know, we are a country of immigrants. Immigrants have contributed a lot to our country and, as you know, this is the greatest country in the world. Even though I have some concerns about the new administration, I am proud to call myself an American citizen.”

Expressing their pride in the country, Republicans expressed their belief that the founding ideas were the reason for the country’s success.

Rep. Glenn Grothman, R-Wisc., said he believes the Constitution gives citizens the freedom to thrive.

“I think it’s our Constitution and all the freedoms that we have that other countries don’t have, which causes us to be so much richer than other countries — that’s not the point. But you look at the average American with a front yard and a backyard, even in Western Europe they don’t have that, not even Israel has it, the other top countries have it. We have it here in the United States,” Grothman said.

“So I think it’s the combination of material wealth that impresses you and a Christian nation that is also so tremendous.”
