Wimbledon 2026 results: Naomi Osaka stuns Aryna Sabalenka in superb performance to reach quarter-finals

A resurgent Naomi Osaka stunned world number one Aryna Sabalenka with a stunning performance to reach the quarter-finals of Wimbledon for the first time.

Japan’s Osaka surpassed her fellow four-time Grand Slam champion in terms of points and strikes, beating her 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) on Center Court.

This was Sabalenka’s first Grand Slam appearance since the 2022 French Open and her first straight-sets exit in 122 matches.

But she was met with an inspired performance from Osaka, who held her racket to her head in disbelief after clinching victory on the second match point.

Osaka, who advanced to the second week of the French Open for the first time last month, will be in the last eight of Wimbledon for the first time.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve had this much fun on the court,” Osaka said.

“It means a lot to do this here.”

This was the fourth meeting between the two strikers in three months, with Sabalenka having won the previous three meetings.

This time Osaka was dominant from start to finish, keeping up with Sabalenka’s tempo and moving well around the court.

Sabalenka made a rash exit afterwards as her quest for the first Grand Slam of the year continues.

Osaka will face Czech 10th seed Karolina Muchova in the semi-finals
