Prince Harry’s spokesman has responded to claims that the Duke of Sussex will not be staying at Buckingham Palace during his return to England this week. On Monday, it was reported that Harry had accepted an offer to stay at the Palace during the London leg of his tour.
A spokesman for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex told reporters: “I am aware of numerous briefings from Buckingham Palace last week suggesting that the Duke did not accept the offer of accommodation at the Royal Residence.
“Following RAVEC’s decision not to ensure the safety of his family, the Duke spent the last week making alternative security arrangements. Once these arrangements were made, he was able to formally accept an offer of accommodation for him for the weekend.
“It is therefore disappointing that the offer has been withdrawn, citing Tuesday’s decision in the Associated Newspapers Limited case. However, Buckingham Palace has been aware of this decision since last Thursday, so it is unclear why it withdrew the offer of accommodation at the last minute after formally accepting it.”
Prince Harry’s main reason for returning is to attend One Year to Stay events for the Invictus Games, which will take place in both London and Birmingham.
There was confusing back-and-forth at the weekend following reports that Harry would travel alone to the UK after the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC) rejected Sussex’s application for taxpayer-funded armed police protection during the London leg.
It is not yet known whether Meghan Markle and the couple’s two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, will join her in the UK during the week.
Prince Harry had planned to travel with Meghan and their children. Children will meet Queen Elizabeth II in June 2022. It has been four years since they last saw their grandfather in person when they visited England for Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee.
Meanwhile, Harry last visited England in September 2025 and had a brief meeting with King Charles at Clarence House.
It was previously reported that Harry planned to take his wife and children to Althorp House in Northamptonshire to see the grave of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales. The house, which belonged to his uncle Charles Earl Spencer, was mysteriously closed between July 10 and 11.
