Union Home Minister Amit Shah laid the foundation stone of the 125-foot statue of Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee in Kolkata on Monday. The statue will be erected in the New City area.
Speaking later at a program to commemorate Mookerjee’s 125th birth anniversary, Mr. Shah said, “Today, on the occasion of his 125th birth anniversary, the foundation stone of his 125-metre statue was laid in West Bengal as a tribute to his enduring legacy.”
He expressed satisfaction over the existence of a BJP government in West Bengal. He also touched on the abrogation of Article 370: “Today Prime Minister Modi fulfilled his promise by abrogating Article 370; today Kashmir is an integral part of India,” he said.
Mr. Shah said the Suvendu Adhikari government in West Bengal wasted no time in fulfilling promises made by the BJP, including implementation of Annapurna Yojana, grant of land to BSF and free travel for women in government buses. “We are fulfilling the promises we made in our Sankalp Patra during the elections,” he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also addressed the event through a video message and called Syama Prasad Mookerjee a visionary, patriot and advocate of national unity. “Today, the nation and West Bengal remember the great son of the soil, a great patriot who was dedicated to the integrity of India,” Mr. Modi said.
