IMD issues red alert for Wayanad, Kozhikode districts in Kerala warning of extreme heavy rain on Tuesday

A day after heavy rains hit Wayanad and Kozhikode districts of Kerala, the India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert warning of extremely heavy rains for the two districts on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, while an orange alert has been issued for Malappuram, Kannur and Kasaragod, where intense heavy rains are expected within 24 hours.
A yellow alert has also been issued for Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam and Idukki districts, warning of isolated heavy rain within 24 hours.
Depression in Bay of Bengal
The depression over the Bay of Bengal triggered heavy rains across Kerala, especially in northern Kerala and the West Coast of the country.
A yellow alert has been issued in Wayanad on Monday, July 6, 2026. However, approximately 265 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 08.30 am on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, was classified as extremely heavy rainfall by the IMD.
