Baruipur rape-murder case: One key accused killed in police encounter

Prabhas Mondal, one of the accused in the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl in West Bengal’s Baruipur, was killed during an encounter with the police on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.
According to police, the defendant was shot in the early hours of Wednesday, July 8, 2026, after trying to “escape police custody” during a crime scene reconstruction exercise.
A senior official said that the accused was taken to Suryapur in Baruipur on Tuesday night, July 7, 2026, for crime reconstruction.
On Sunday, July 5, 2026, the dismembered body of a 12-year-old minor girl was recovered from a pond in Baruipur district of South 24 Parganas; family members claimed she was raped and murdered. The incident sparked protests in the area when an angry mob beat to death a 40-year-old man who they suspected of being the defendant’s partner.
The six-member Special Investigation Team, along with Baruipur district police, on Monday, July 6, 2026, arrested three of the four suspects named in the FIR, including Ananda Sardar, the prime accused in the case, after overnight search operations and interrogation of three others detained.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also assured the victim’s family members that his government will ensure that all the accused responsible for this heinous crime are given death penalty.
