Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear on Wednesday requested an update from the office of Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., on the senator’s health, increasing public pressure for more information as the 84-year-old remains hospitalized for more than three weeks after being admitted.
“Over the past several weeks, Kentuckians have become increasingly concerned about the health and well-being of Senator McConnell,” Democrat Beshear said. expression. “As Governor and as a public servant who understands the commitment we make to the people we serve, I request that the Senator provide an update on the current health situation.”
Beshear said the ongoing speculation “isn’t fair to the Senator or Kentuckians,” adding that he hopes McConnell will share the information “transparently, directly from the source.”
McConnell was hospitalized on June 14, and few details about his condition or the circumstances of his hospitalization have been released, according to a statement from McConnell’s office.
The former Senate majority leader rejected a bid for an eighth term following a series of health scares.
Asked by CNBC on Tuesday about the latest update, McConnell’s office noted a brief statement he released last week saying the senator “appreciates the support he has received as he continues to recover in the hospital.”
“The Senator continues to improve and works closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session,” the statement said.
