It’s Disappointing, We Fell Short on Our Execution: Shreyas Iyer

Bristol: India skipper Shreyas Iyer did not hide his disappointment and admitted that his team had once again completely failed to execute in all departments after England wrapped up the T20I series with an emphatic nine-wicket win.
Iyer helped India post 158 for 7 with an unbeaten score of 80; England were stunned by this total, who headed home with just 13.5 overs to spare.
“It was again a disappointing result. 158 was not the perfect total on the board. In the end we saw how fast they were chasing it. When we got to the ball I asked the bowlers to repeat the lengths as much as possible.
“It was difficult to score goals in the middle and upper legs. We fell short in execution.”
Iyer was happy with his performance but said it did not matter as he did not come with a winning aim.
“I’m definitely happy with my performance, but if it’s not about the win, it just goes to the side. I’m very disappointed in that respect because whenever I play, I want to perform and make my team win. But unfortunately today wasn’t that day. I’m definitely looking forward to the next game.”
Iyer also stated that the current Indian team is in a transition phase and said that the players will learn from their mistakes and adapt quickly.
“This is a transition phase and we will make mistakes. We need to understand how important it is to adapt. I am sure that there are fast learners in the team and they will evaluate themselves.”
England captain Harry Brook credited his team’s ability to adapt to the conditions and strong communication between players and coaching staff for the comprehensive victory against India.
“Tonight was a lot of fun. It’s always nice to beat India. To beat them 3-0 with one game left… I’m very happy,” Brook said.
“Two things definitely stood out, the way we adapted to the field and the communication between coaches and players and vice versa. Those two things stood out.”
He also praised pacers Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue for securing victory with another sharp spell.
“Jofra and Tongue are like a house on fire again. It will be quite nice to be world No 1 – it’s definitely a target for us. I felt good (with the bat).”
A series sweep in Southampton on Saturday will see England dethrone world champions India from the top spot in the T20I rankings.
