First Photography Prize exhibition unveiled in Freo’s PIAZZA, inviting locals to wander open-air gallery

A new photography exhibition celebrating local talent will take center stage this weekend in the heart of Fremantle with a $6000 prize pool.
The inaugural PIAZZA Photography Prize exhibition will take the form of an open-air gallery, showcasing a wide range of works from both established professionals and emerging photographers.
PIAZZA creative director Sam Bloor created a unique exhibition to showcase talented local photographers and allow them to share their art with the community.
“Fremantle has always been shaped by its artists and this award is about recognizing that and creating space for that,” he said.
“It’s an incredibly exciting opportunity to showcase the breadth of photographic talent in WA and provide a platform for people to have their work seen as part of the city’s public fabric.”
Artists were encouraged to capture whatever caught their attention, from familiar street scenes to community characters.
Fremantle photographer Adam Kenna has selected the final 65 pieces, which will now be judged by Perth Photography Center director Christine Thomas, Three Gates Media photographer Marnie Richardson and John Curtin Gallery artist and community engagement facilitator Ron Bradfield Jnr.
A total prize pool of $6000 will be awarded in various categories.

PIAZZA owner Bronwyn Owen spent $12.5 million to buy the space, which had been neglected for years, in September last year.
Since then, he has been working tirelessly to bring the iconic Freo spot back to life with community events, art installations and revegetation.
“Artists bring energy, perspective and identity to a place, and we want to support that at PIAZZA,” he said.
“This exhibition highlights creativity in a way that is open and accessible to everyone and continues to advance the belief that artists make Freo.”
The Photography Award exhibition will be held at PİAZZA from 11 July to 26 July.
Award winners will be announced on Friday, July 24.
