Man Utd’s Ederson move in doubt

Manchester United’s attempt to sign Ederson from Serie A team Atalanta is doubtful.

United signed the Brazilian midfielder for a fee of £35m on 2 June.

The aim was for Ederson to pass a medical at the beginning of July so that the transfer could be completed before pre-season training began.

However, this plan had to be canceled after the 27-year-old football player was called up late for Carlo Ancelotti’s World Cup squad.

Ederson was expected to receive medical treatment after Brazil were knocked out, and United sources confirmed this exclusively when first reports of the transfer cancellation emerged last weekend.

Brazil were later eliminated by Norway, but there has been no update on Ederson despite Chelsea’s Andrey Santos and former Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow closing in on moves to United and relevant deals being reached in the last 48 hours.

Sources said medical tests showed there was a problem, with one of them telling BBC Sport the deal was off.

However, sources at both clubs deny this is the case and say no decision has been made regarding the transfer. It is thought that Ederson will stay in the United States.

If the transfer fails, it will be the final defeat of what will be a difficult summer for the Old Trafford outfit.

United, who finished third last season, prioritized strengthening their defense before returning to the Champions League after a two-year absence.

However, hopes of signing first-choice Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest ended when the Englishman’s transfer fee rose to £116 million; This was a figure United did not want to match.

They then targeted Mateus Fernandes. However, a change of leadership at West Ham meant they had less need to make a quick sale, and when Tottenham announced their interest in the Portuguese internationally, United soon realized the final price (£85 million) was a long way from the expected fee. United offered the same figure but included additional payments and Fernandes chose Tottenham.

Theoretically, Ederson was at least signed by then, meaning some hiring was initiated before this week’s deals involving Santos and Darlow were agreed.

Now fans are in limbo, waiting to discover whether the Ederson deal will go through.
