At least 27 dead after massive fire rips through Bangkok pub

A massive fire broke out at a bar in Bangkok early Monday, killing at least 27 people and injuring scores of others as patrons tried to escape the smoke-filled venue, authorities said.

The fire was reported around midnight at the Na Ladprao bar in the northern part of Thailand’s capital, Associated Press reported, citing rescue teams.

Video shared by first responders showed flames rising from the front of the building and thick black smoke billowing into the sky as people scrambled to escape.

Firefighters brought the fire under control in about 30 minutes, according to the Associated Press.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said at the scene that 27 people died and many injured were hospitalized.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

The Prime Minister said a musician performing at the bar told Anutin that he saw smoke coming from a circuit breaker near the stage shortly before the power went out.

According to the Associated Press, an explosion was heard a few minutes later and thick smoke spread throughout the venue.

Most of the victims were found in the restrooms at the back of the bar, Anutin said.
