Conor McGregor couldn’t believe his five-year return to the octagon ended the way it did against Max Holloway at UFC 329 on Saturday night.

But Joe Rogan said it was a “crazy” move he tried in the opening round that cost him dearly.

“He tried a crazy move. He tried to do a jumping kick,” Rogan said during the UFC broadcast after the main event ended. “… if you don’t land well, in a supportive way, you put a lot of pressure on that knee. His knee landed in the worst position.”

After Holloway dodged the kick, McGregor’s attempted kick clearly injured him and he immediately grabbed his knee. McGregor tried to continue fighting, but referee Mike Beltran called the fight after he tried another kick and clearly failed to land.

“The first move he made, he blew his ACL,” Rogan suggested. “It sucks, but you just don’t do it.”

CONOR MCGREGOR Reacts to UFC’s Disastrous Comeback: ‘HEAD CAME OUT’

After speaking with doctors, UFC president Dana White said McGregor had torn his cruciate ligament. Scans of McGregor’s knee will need to confirm the diagnosis.

Former MMA fighter-turned-broadcaster Daniel Cormier added that McGregor’s long absence from the sport may have contributed to the injury.

“When you’re away from there for so long and you come back out there, it’s like you popped out of a cannon,” Cormier explained.

“So you see these guys who haven’t been around for a long time doing irrational things. I think that’s what happened to Conor.”

McGregor was upset after Beltran called the match, and understandably so. This was the 37-year-old’s first fight since facing Dustin Poirier on July 10, 2021.

Following the loss, McGregor posted a heartbreaking tweet before the match, saying he was fully healthy.

“My head gasket is gone. Ruined,” he wrote. “I didn’t suffer any injuries during the fight. I was kicking, standing and jumping backstage throughout the camp and before the fight. This came out of nowhere. I’m beyond darkness here. I can only describe it as hell.”

Rogan also suggested that McGregor was trying to display no fear with his signature strikes with his surgically repaired left leg. Either way, it ultimately cost the Irishman.

McGregor’s UFC career record stands at 22-7 after this TKO finish.
