Melbourne Storm star sidelined for 4-6 weeks after knee surgery
Melbourne have suffered a major blow in their run to the NRL finals; Fifth and eighth star Cameron Munster is booked for surgery that could cause him to miss the remainder of the regular season.
Storm still have a chance to make the finals. They are four points adrift of the top eight after 19 rounds but have bid farewell to their campaign.
Nick Meaney’s 78th-minute try saw them lose 22-18 to the Gold Coast on Saturday night, but seven consecutive defeats at the start of the season have left them four points adrift of the top eight.
“Melbourne Storm can confirm that Cameron Munster will undergo knee surgery following a cartilage injury,” the club statement released on Tuesday morning said.
“Munster will begin rehabilitation with the Storm medical team and is expected to be out for at least 4-6 weeks.”
The 31-year-old No. 6 representative was rested by Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy for the Titans clash after playing in all 15 club matches for which he was available this year and three State of Origin matches for Queensland.
The Maroons’ captain was replaced by Tyran Wishart in last Sunday’s match at AAMI Park, and the 26-year-old utility player took the first place in Friday night’s match against the third-placed Sydney Roosters (28 points).
