The number of households paying for a television license fell by half a million last year; A decrease of 2.5 million since 2019.

This follows a series of scandals that have rocked the BBC; The BBC’s chief executive, Samir Shah, admitted that the backlash resulting from high-profile errors had damaged public trust.

These include misleading editing of Donald Trump’s speech, the son of a Hamas official narrating a Gaza documentary, and allowing anti-Semitic chants to be broadcast during the Glastonbury broadcast.

A TV license is required to watch or record live television on any channel or to stream or download programs on BBC iPlayer. And this includes not just televisions, but also viewing on computers and phones.

Figures revealed 23.3 million licenses were purchased in the 2025/26 financial year, up from 25.9 million in 2018/19.

The BBC also admitted that it had been abandoned by viewers using streaming services such as Netflix and Disney+, with the number of households declaring they did not need a license increasing by 62,000 over the year to a total of 3.7 million.

Now it’s time to have your say in the Daily Mail’s latest poll; Should the license fee be abolished?

Yesterday’s poll asked Mail readers: ‘Should police be investigated for insisting Ann Widdecombe’s murder was not linked to terrorism?’ Of more than 8,000 votes, 82 percent said ‘yes’ and 18 percent said ‘no’.
