The India-UK free trade agreement will unlock untapped potential in labour-intensive industries and offer zero-duty market access for 99% of the country’s exports, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Wednesday, July 15, 2026.
He said that the agreement, which will come into force on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, is the key to the Viksit Bharat envisaged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“The agreement will unlock untapped potential in labour-intensive industries by offering zero-duty market access to 99% of Indian exports, including textiles, leather, engineering, food processing, pharmaceuticals and MSME sectors,” Mr Shah said on X.
He said the agreement was a testament to the Centre’s pro-people diplomacy.
He said the agreement would also grant significant exemptions to Indian professionals in the UK.

The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which came into force on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, was signed between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his British counterpart Keir Starmer in July last year.
The deal is expected to at least double trade between the two countries by 2030 from its current estimated annual level of £48bn, and increase their GDP by around £5bn each year in the long term.
