‘Gutted’ Prince William leads tributes to defeated England team

The Prince of Wales reacted to England’s defeat in the men’s World Cup semi-final, writing that he was “saddened” by the 2-1 defeat against Argentina.

The statement shared by Kensington Palace said: “The fight and belief you showed inspired us all. The most complete England team in a tournament.

“Keep your head up,” he said and signed the letter “W”, suggesting it came directly from Football Association boss Prince William.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also said he was “gutted” by England’s defeat, but added: “The passion and energy they showed in representing the badge made us all proud.”

Argentina scored two late goals after a goalless first half and two goals from England’s Anthony Gordon in the 55th minute to secure their place in the final against Spain in Atlanta.

The Prince of Wales is often seen cheering on Aston Villa FC, expressing his strong passion for football.

“Thank you to everyone on and off the field for an incredible tournament,” he said in the statement.

Sir Keir’s last speech to the House of Commons as prime minister on Wednesday also included many references to the English side’s tense build-up to the qualifying match.

“Tonight was not the result we all hoped for,” Sir Keir said after the match whistle blew. “But this England team did their best.”
