World Cup 2026: Thomas Tuchel retains FA backing despite England defeat

England head coach Thomas Tuchel maintains the support of the Football Association and is expected to lead the team to Euro 2028.
England lost 2-1 to Argentina on Wednesday, failing to qualify for the World Cup final for the first time since 1966.
Tuchel was criticized for his substitution as England took a 1-0 lead late on, but said he planned to stay – a decision that had the full support of FA chairman Mark Bullingham.
“We will continue the contract until the home Euros,” Tuchel said.
“Although it’s hard to look forward right now, I’m looking forward to it.
“A lot of big football countries get eliminated before the semi-finals, so this is an achievement.
“Nobody wants to hear that right now, neither do I, because we demand the most from ourselves. That’s the nature of being competitive.”
Tuchel signed a two-year contract extension in February after being appointed on an 18-month mandate to win the World Cup in January 2025.
England, Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland will host the 2028 European Championship.
