Outrage after ICE tackles Australian man at US airport

Footage of two Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents tackling an Australian man at a Las Vegas metro area airport has sparked public outrage and criticism from elected officials.

In a video posted on social media, an elderly man screaming and crying on the ground at Harry Reid International Airport Terminal 3 was attempted to be controlled, handcuffed and detained by a man and a masked woman, both in civilian clothes, on Monday.

When the couple realized they were being filmed, they walked away, leaving the elderly man with handcuffs on one arm.

Late Monday afternoon, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police identified the couple as ICE agents.

They found no arrest warrant for him, so they removed his handcuffs and notified ICE.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, ICE officers did not proceed with the arrest of 57-year-old Australian citizen Phu Nguyen, who was filling out her visa at the Las Vegas Airport on Monday.

The Department of Homeland Security said ICE arrested him on his flight from Los Angeles International Airport on Tuesday “despite attempts by agitators to help him evade ICE officers at the Las Vegas airport.”

“ICE continues to act with impunity, instilling fear in our communities and intimidating tourists, hurting our tourism economy,” Democrat Jacky Rosen, a U.S. senator from Nevada, said in a statement. he said.

“Enough is enough. ICE must follow the same common sense guardrails as other law enforcement agencies.”

The Nevada Latino Legislative Caucus and the Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Caucus are calling for a full investigation into the aborted arrest by ICE at Harry Reid International Airport, urging Gov. Joe Lombardo to clarify the transparency and accountability of federal law enforcement agencies operating in Nevada.
