Burnham’s oil and gas field announcement

Labour’s 2024 manifesto, which the new leader said he would follow, promised to honor existing licenses but not grant new ones.

The fate of two oil fields in Scotland – Rosebank and Jackdaw – which regulators approved under the Conservative government in 2022 and 2023 but were canceled in 2025 following a legal challenge, has become a contentious issue within the Labor Party.

Some lawmakers have called for more drilling to help keep energy bills low, while others have insisted that increasing renewable energy is the way to improve energy security. The BBC reported that an announcement could be made by Monday.

The announcement is believed to form part of a raft of new policy measures, including plans to take public control of water and energy companies and a new town hall building programme.

Nigel Farage has called for an immediate general election, claiming Andy Burnham has no authority to lead the country.
