Commonwealth Games: Mirabai Chanu, Lovlina Borgohain named India’s flag and baton bearers for opening ceremony

Olympic medalists Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain have been chosen as India’s flag bearer and baton bearer respectively for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.

The two award-winning athletes will lead India’s representation at the ceremony and bring together the country’s two most successful names in weightlifting and boxing.

Mirabai, an Olympic silver medalist and multiple Commonwealth Games medalist, has become one of India’s leading performers in weightlifting on the international stage.

Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina has also managed to rank among India’s foremost boxers with her remarkable performances in major global competitions.

This ceremonial honor centers around the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, where the high-profile duo will lead a formidable 126-member contingent of Indian athletes.

The entire delegation, which has been officially sanctioned by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports as well as the Indian Olympic Association, consists of 78 men and 48 women from eight core sports and five para-sports disciplines.
The action kicks off at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro arena on 23 July, kicking off an intense 11-day campaign that runs until 2 August. While Mirabai and Lovlina took center stage at the opening ceremony, India’s wider sports campaign features elite global icons such as two-time Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra, who leads the 32-member athletics team.

Strong competitive squads have also been formed for judo, athletics cycling, swimming, lawn bowls and artistic gymnastics.

With an extensive track record of success at Commonwealth level, this year’s team comes to Scotland heavily favored to challenge for the podium on both traditional and para-athletic venues.
