Jude Bellingham breaks England World Cup goalscoring record

Jude Bellingham became first Englishman to score seven goals in a single World Cup with a late strike Defeated France 6-4 in the third place play-off.

The Real Madrid midfielder was level with both Gary Lineker, who scored six goals in Mexico ’86, and teammate Harry Kane, who scored six goals in Russia in 2018 and this tournament.

Bellingham, 23, came on in the 79th minute and scored with the final shot of the game, leading a counter-attack from the halfway line into the France penalty area, then beating a defender and slotting into the bottom corner.

“He’s so confident in his own ability,” former England midfielder Danny Murphy told BBC One during the match. “Patience, skill and shooting. What a beautiful goal from England’s best player.”

Twelve minutes ago he looked ready to take the penalty but instead passed the ball to Bukayo Saka who completed his hat-trick.

After the match Saka told BBC One: “No, Jude [Bellingham] He never took it. He was the first one to say go and score a hat-trick, so none of that came to distract me. I was always going to get it.”
