Indiramma Housing Scheme Fulfils Kolam Adivasis’ Dream

Kolam adivasis, a particularly vulnerable tribal group, are happy that their long-standing dream of having a permanent home has come true.
Adivasis were facing problems in their traditional homes. They expressed their happiness in front of the students of Sociology Department of Satavahana University Karimnagar.
As part of the syllabus of Participatory Learning Assessment (PLA) course, a team of 11 students and four faculty members visited Kolam Kotari village waterfalls in Kerameri mandal of Kumuram Bheem Asifabad district.
During the visit, students studied various aspects including living conditions of Kolams, lifestyle, financial conditions and others.
22 out of 50 families got permanent homes under the Indiramma housing scheme. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy handed over the houses to the Adivasis while attending the house warming ceremony held in the village on June 1, 2026.
Sharing the details of the visit with Deccan Chronicle, student Ashvini Om Prakash said that Kolam adivasis are happy to have a permanent home as they will not have such huge money to build houses.
Since the Adivasis prepared houses with mud or thatch roofs, snakes would enter their houses. Moreover, he reported that rainwater also enters such houses.
Another student M. Chennakeshavulu said Kolams asked the government to approve giving houses to the remaining families. The Indiramma housing scheme became a boon for the Kolams because their land and houses were acquired for Singari’s Kairiguda open coal mine. Kolam families lived in Chopidi, Chanduguda, Thayaguda and Govarguda.
Leading the students is Department Head Prof. Surepalli Sujatha said that Komal adivasis feel having permanent homes as a symbol of pride.
