New York flight cancellations: Over 630 flights cancelled as thunderstorms batter LaGuardia, JFK, Newark
More than 630 flights departing from New York area airports were canceled at 7 a.m. EST on Tuesday, while nearly 70 flights were delayed, according to FlightAware. The disruption follows a difficult Monday that saw hundreds of additional flights canceled or delayed as the first storms moved through the region.
Severe weather conditions cause flight disruptions
The cancellations were due to severe weather affecting the Northeast. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood watch through Tuesday night for the New York metropolitan area, including New York City and northeastern New Jersey.
The agency warned of wind gusts of up to 50 knots and downpours with peak rates of about 2.5 inches per hour in some places.
FAA orders ground stop at LaGuardia
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a ground stop at LaGuardia until 8 a.m. EST due to the storm. The agency said the restriction could be extended later Tuesday, potentially expanding to include JFK and Newark.
American Airlines travel exemption
American Airlines has issued a travel waiver covering New York area airports along with Baltimore (BWI), Boston (BOS), Philadelphia (PHL), Washington-Dulles (IAD), Washington-Reagan (DCA) and White Plains (HPN).
The waiver will be valid for travel through July 21 and will allow affected passengers to rebook flights until July 23.
Delta Air Lines waiver details
Delta Air Lines announced waivers for passengers traveling via LaGuardia, JFK, Newark, Boston (BOS), Baltimore (BWI), Washington-Reagan (DCA), White Plains (HPN), Washington-Dulles (IAD) and Philadelphia (PHL).
The exemption covers travel through Tuesday, July 22, and allows customers to rebook flights for travel on or before July 25.
JetBlue expands exemption at Northeast hubs
JetBlue initiated a waiver covering 11 airports in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, including LaGuardia, JFK, Newark, White Plains, Islip (ISP), Boston (BOS), Philadelphia (PHL), Washington-Reagan (DCA), Baltimore (BWI), Richmond (RIC), and Norfolk (ORF).
The waiver is valid for travel through July 22 and allows passengers to rebook flights through July 26 without paying a change fee or fare difference.
United Airlines offers free rebooking
United Airlines has issued a waiver for passengers using LaGuardia, JFK, Newark and Philadelphia (PHL).
The waiver covers travel scheduled for Tuesday, July 21, and allows passengers to rebook free of charge until July 23, as long as they keep the same departure and arrival point and remain in the original cabin class.
Passengers are advised to regularly check the official websites, mobile apps or social media channels of their respective airlines for the latest flight status, travel advisories, waiver policies and rebooking options. As weather conditions continue to be unpredictable, airlines may update schedules and passenger support measures at short notice.
