Nina Kennedy and Tim Hodge named Australian flag and baton bearers for Glasgow opening ceremony
Commonwealth Games champions Nina Kennedy and Tim Hodge have been chosen as the Australian flag and baton bearers for the opening ceremony in Glasgow.
Kennedy and Hodge, both reigning Birmingham 2022 champions, will lead the Australian team on Friday 24 July (AEST).
Competing at their third Commonwealth Games, Kennedy and Hodge were announced as flag and baton bearers by Australian Chief of Mission Petria Thomas on Wednesday afternoon (local time) at Glasgow’s Bridge Gardens, just above the city’s River Clyde.
Olympic and Commonwealth Games pole vault champion Kennedy, who has been battling injuries since Paris 2024 in Glasgow, said leading the team at the opening ceremony meant more than he could put into words.
“I am proud to follow in the footsteps of the many great Australians who have carried the flag before me,” Kennedy said.
“The Commonwealth Games have always meant a lot to me; it was where I won my first medal in 2018.
“This is my third Games and I’m lucky enough to defend my title. My final is by the end of the week, so I’ll get some sleep the next morning. I’ve worked with our team to make sure I’m as prepared as possible, and there’s no version of the Games where I’d pass up the chance to carry that flag.”
Hodge, who will defend his title in the men’s 100 meter backstroke S9, was honored to be given this task.
“I have been lucky enough to compete in two Commonwealth Games already and both times I watched the team come into the stadium and took great pride in watching the green and gold come in,” Hodge said.
“Taking on this role now, having it happen in Glasgow, of all places, where I made my international debut, means the Games already feel special.
“This will be my first time hiking too, I usually race on the first day. I can’t wait to experience the excitement.”
Thomas said Kennedy and Hodge were given the honor not only for their results but also for their leadership of the Australian team.
“They each have longevity, character and humility and the support of the entire Australian sporting community behind them,” Thomas said.
“Nina gives more on and off the track and we know she is a proven performer… Tim heads into his third Commonwealth Games with two Paralympic gold medals and a world record to his name.
“He made his Australian debut in this very city over a decade ago and brings a calm yet inspiring approach that brings joy to those around him wherever he goes.
“I know they will lead our team with pride and grace.”
