Suspect detained after fatal stabbing at German bank

Local media and police reported that a 20-year-old knife-wielding man who fatally attacked a man and appeared to be holding others hostage at a bank in the southern German city of Regensburg was detained.

According to news outlet Passauer Neue Presse, the German man was taken out by the police, ending the hostage situation that lasted several hours.

Police said that the two people inside with the suspect were taken out by heavily armed police units.

Police said the victim suffered life-threatening injuries during the incident and later died at the hospital.

A police spokesman said: “We are currently assuming this is the action of a single perpetrator.”

The incident initially sparked fears that the attacker was holding people hostage and police were unable to determine how many people were left inside the bank.

Investigators are treating the incident as murder and robbery.

The suspect’s motive was not immediately known.

Heavily armed police units, emergency services and negotiators were dispatched to the scene, while a police helicopter circled overhead.

PNP quoted police as saying that search operations in the building were ongoing.
