Alex Bowman announces retirement plan after 2027 NASCAR Cup Series season

The future of Alex Bowman’s NASCAR Cup Series was uncertain, but that’s no longer the case.
The driver of Hendrick Motorsports’ No. 48 Chevrolet Camaro has signed a one-year extension to remain with the team through 2027.
However, after this the 33-year-old will retire from full-time racing.

“I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what comes next, and this feels like the right decision at the right time,” Bowman said in a statement. “Sports demand a lot from you, and I’ve learned that it’s important to listen to your body and make the right choices for yourself. To say I’m incredibly grateful to Mr. Hendrick, our partners at Ally and Chevrolet, and everyone at Hendrick Motorsports would be an understatement. They believed in me and gave me the greatest opportunity of my life.”

Bowman has been battling injuries for the past few years. Concussion-like symptoms ruled him out of five races throughout the 2022 season, while a fractured vertebra sustained in a sprint car accident forced him to miss three races the following season. He also missed four races this season due to vertigo problems.

The Tucson native has eight career wins, including four in the 2021 season.

This season has been a tough one for No. 48. He sits 29th in the standings with an average finishing position of 21.765, his worst since the 2015 season before joining Hendrick Motorsports.
