India’s First Hydrogen Train Marks Resounding Success on Jind–Sonipat Route

Jind: Setting a new standard in public transport, India’s first hydrogen fuel cell passenger train has proven to be a historic success on the Jind-Sonipat route. This hydrogen-powered train, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 17, has covered an impressive distance of nearly 900 kilometers without any problems in the first five days of commercial operation. This has placed the country firmly among the elite global club of nations successfully operating state-of-the-art hydrogen rail technology. By replacing conventional diesel engines with two advanced 1,200-kilowatt hydrogen-electric propulsion systems, the new train has significantly reduced diesel and conventional electricity consumption. Onboard fuel cells combine hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity to power the train, releasing only water vapor and heat as direct byproducts. This zero-emission mechanism offers an incredibly green and sustainable travel option for daily commuters.

Moreover, the use of this latest technology did not impose an additional financial burden on passengers. Ticket prices have been kept quite affordable – exactly the same as ordinary DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) services (between Rs 10 and Rs 25) – ensuring that sustainable travel remains fully accessible to ordinary people. This 10-car hydrogen train serves as a highly cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to fuel-dependent trains. By completely eliminating pollutant emissions and reducing dependence on expensive fuel imports, this train actively advances India’s ‘National Green Hydrogen Mission’. Its long-term operational framework, supported by a purpose-built hydrogen storage and refueling facility at Jind, ensures maximum economic sustainability for Indian Railways. The historic success of the Jind-Sonipat hydrogen train serves as a credible blueprint for the development of clean, green and self-sufficient transport infrastructure across the country.
