A much-loved independent store in Glasgow is set to close its doors for the final time after 15 years of business. Betty Beans on Kilmarnock Road in Shawlands will welcome customers for the last time on August 2 after owners said it had become too difficult to sustain business.

The family-run gift and card shop has become a familiar part of the local high street, selling everything from greeting cards and stationery to candles, home decor, jewellery, scarves and seasonal gifts. Announcing the news on Facebook, business owners said, “Hello, dear FB friends. We were hoping things wouldn’t come to this point, but now it’s time to say goodbye.”

The statement continued as follows: “We will close our doors for the last time on Sunday, August 2. We are very sorry about this, but it has become very difficult to continue our journey in the current environment.

“A huge thank you to all our regulars and everyone who has purchased cards, candles or Christmas decorations from us over the last 15 years. We loved being a part of this community and will miss it.

“We will be running a small sale in the coming days… 25% off all your purchases.

“We’ll also be having a Christmas in July area with 75% off all things Christmassy! So we hope to see you soon! Thanks again xx.”

The store’s closure has sparked overwhelming support from loyal customers, many of whom have been visiting the store for years.

One person wrote: “I’m so sorry to hear this! Love your store and always find something special. I wish you all the best and will be sure to visit in the next few weeks.”

Another said: “This is so sad, we need to get back to the shops or we’ll lose them all.”

A third commented: “I was so sad when you told me this today. Best wishes to you both, it was always so nice to come into your shop and have a nice chat and laugh.”

The store’s last day of trading will be on August 2.
