Hungarian Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton leads Charles Leclerc in Ferrari one-two in Friday practice

Lewis Hamilton led teammate Charles Leclerc to a Ferrari one-two in practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix on Friday.

Hamilton was 0.148 seconds ahead of Leclerc, McLaren’s Lando Norris was third, 0.499 seconds behind and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was fourth.

Fernando Alonso finished the day 19th fastest in the new Aston Martin after team principal Adrian Newey said it was a “promising” first drive for a new car apart from its engine, gearbox and front suspension.

Alonso was 2.990 seconds off the pace, but lapped around 0.4 seconds faster at the final corner due to track limits.

Although this is still a long way from competitiveness, it is a significant step forward from where Aston Martin has spent most of the season.

The Ferrari appeared to be in good shape, as could be expected on a track suited to the car’s strong cornering performance.

But Mercedes appeared to have some work to do, with George Russell 0.933 seconds behind and championship leader Kimi Antonelli 13th.

Antonelli failed to complete the qualifying simulation round in the second session.

The first had to be abandoned when Franco Colapinto crashed his Alpine at the final corner, while the second failed when he made a mistake entering the chicane.

Antonelli suffered from rear brake locking throughout the session but matched Norris’ time in the first sector on both laps before the laps were shortened.

After Russell, he became the sixth fastest man, ahead of Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar, Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.

Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg and Racing Bulls’ Arvid Lindblad rounded out the top 10.
