Angela Rayner reportedly earned more than £180,000 during her year away from the Cabinet. Rayner, who has been MP for Ashton-under-Lyne since 2015, was handed over his former role as Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government by the Prime Minister and his ally Andy Burnham at the beginning of the week.

Ms Rayner, who served as deputy Prime Minister under Burnham’s predecessor Sir Keir Starmer, resigned from the Cabinet in September 2025 amid a row over her tax affairs. He has since been cleared of any wrongdoing by HMRC. Public disclosures of his financial interests now show that he has amassed a small fortune from various activities since September. Documents shared online show Ms Rayner earned £104,000 for 15.45 hours of speaking engagements, including lucrative deals with organizations such as the Association of Management Consultants.

However, he donated £15,000 of his speaking earnings to charity. Daily Mail reports.

She is currently writing a memoir about her remarkable rise from young mother to second-in-command to Ser Keir.

Interest records show he received a £61,500 advance for the book from publisher The Bodly Head, an imprint of Penguin Random House.

She previously took aim at MPs earning money outside parliament, saying being a Parliamentarian “isn’t a second job”, it is “the job”.

Apart from these secondary earnings, he also received a ministerial exit payment of £16,876, bringing the total funds brought in on top of his ministerial salary (excluding charitable donations) to £182,376.

In her first major broadcast interview since her return, Ms Rayner argued that she had not returned the £16,876 severance pay she received when she resigned.

While in opposition, he harshly criticized Conservative ministers who received lump sums – the equivalent of a quarter of an annual ministerial salary – for just a few weeks’ work during the chaotic period of multiple changes between the premierships of Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak.

Conservatives called on Ms. Rayner to repay her severance package; was a question he was asked when he appeared on BBC Radio 5 Live on Thursday.

Asked if he would heed calls from the Conservatives, he told the broadcaster: “No, I was given my severance pay at the time. I worked in the Government for a while and then left the Government for less than a year, so I guess that’s the timetable and I’ll be serving in the Government again.”

“But for the Conservatives who got the severance pay, we’re talking about weeks. Some of it was even a very short period of time, and I think the broader point about chaos and serving the British people is that our focus is not on having that chaos, not on appearing to be in it, but actually delivering on the promises we made at the general election in 2024.”

As an MP, Ms Rayner also earns a basic salary of £98,599. After his return to the cabinet, he will continue to earn more with the addition of his ministerial salary.

A spokesman for Ms Rayner said: “All earnings were disclosed in accordance with the rules.”
