Michigan house fire kills 8, including 6 children, investigators say

Authorities in Michigan are investigating a possible homicide after eight people, including six children, were found dead in a burned home Friday, with some of the victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office opened a suspicious death investigation after responding to a house fire in Grand Haven County and discovering multiple fatalities.

The victims, all believed to be relatives, included six children ages 5 to 15 and two adults in their 40s, authorities said.

Investigators believe all eight people lived at the home and are working to formally identify them.

The Grand Haven Fire Department initially responded to reports of the odor of smoke in the area between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. Friday, but firefighters were unable to locate the fire.

Just before 11:45 a.m., deputies and firefighters returned after receiving a report of white smoke coming from a home in the 14900 block of Riverside Trail.

Firefighters who extinguished the fire found that there were 8 people in the house.

Investigators later determined that at least some of the victims had been shot, the sheriff’s office said.

Officials said the investigation is ongoing and additional information is expected once autopsies of the victims are completed.

Sheriff’s detectives are investigating along with arson investigators with the Michigan State Police.
