Chinese state media says Nvidia H20 chips not safe for China

Beijing (Reuters) -Nvidia’s H20 chips gave security concerns for China, a social media account of China’s state media on Sunday, said in a statement on Sunday, Beijing increased concerns about the back door access in these chips.

The H20 chips are not also technologically advanced or environmentally friendly, but in an article on WeChat, the state publisher CCTV connected to Yuyuan Tantian.

The article said, “When a kind of chip is neither environmentally friendly nor developed nor safe as consumers, we definitely have the option to not buy.”

Nvidia did not respond immediately to a request for a comment.

The H20 artificial intelligence chips were developed by Nvidia for the Chinese market after implementing export restrictions on advanced AI chips in late 2023. US President Donald Trump’s administration banned sales in April to increase trade tensions with China in April, but reversed the ban in July.

China’s cyber -field guard asked NVIDIA to a meeting on July 31, and the US has asked the chip manufacturer to explain whether the H20 chips have any rear door security risk – a secret method of skipping normal identity or security checks.

NVIDIA said there were no “backroors” that will allow their products to allow remote access or control.

Yuyuan Tantian said in his article that the Nvidia chips can reach functions such as “remote closure” through a “back door”.

Yuyuan Tantian’s interpretation followed the criticism of Nvidia by another Chinese state media organization, People’s Daily.

In a comment at the beginning of this month, People’s Daily said that Nvidia should produce “convincing security evidence” to eliminate the concerns of Chinese users on security risks on their plugs and to regain market confidence.
