Gas giant orbiting Sun’s next-door neighbour could host moons teeming with life | Science | News

Scientists found the strong evidence of a giant gas planet revolving around Alpha Centauri A-the closest sun-like star system, 4.37 light years away. Although the planet is not likely to support life, the months may be promising candidates for livability, and can potentially become our nearest “life -carrying” neighbors beyond the solar system.

This potential gas giant was detected in direct imaging observations by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), the most powerful area observatory to date. The discovery was first reported in August 2024, but so far it was difficult for follow -up observations. Astronomers pay attention that more work is needed to verify their existence and characterize the environment, but attract signs.

Prof. Dr. Oxford University Space Instrumentation Associate Professor Carly Howett said to the BBC: “This is an incredibly exciting finding. Four light years is a long way for us, but very close in the context of our galaxy – practically in our cosmic backyard.

The newly detected planet can roughly allow the existence of liquid water from the outer edge of the livable area of the star – in the orbit of two astronomical units (AU) from Alpha Centauri A. Although the planet is a large gas giant, it is probably wrapped in a thick hydrogen and helium cloud, like Jupiter or Saturn, almost absolutely unfavorable for life itself.

However, scientists are particularly interested in the likelihood that this gas giant is likely to host a lunar system, which is potentially large and icy worlds similar to Jupiter’s Ganymende or Saturn’s Titan. In our solar system, these months have environments that are considered among the most promising ones for extraterrestrial life.

Ganyme, the largest month of the solar system, is thought to have a large underground ocean under the icy shell, while Titan has an intense nitrogen -rich atmosphere and liquid hydrocarbon lakes on its surface. Both bodies are the focus of intensive astrobiological research and the upcoming tasks aiming to investigate the livableness of NASA, such as Europa Clipper and ESA’s water.

Alfa Centauri gas giant, which is located close to the livable region, can host the months with sufficient star energy to protect liquid water on the surface or under surface oceans. Moreover, tidal heating – the gradual interactions between a large planet and satellites – even if they are far from the star, it can provide internal temperature to these months. This heating mechanism continues its surface oceans over months such as Europa and Enceladus in our solar system.

Charles Beichman of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the first author of the study said: “These observations are pushing the boundaries we can make with the world’s most powerful space telescope. Stars like Alpha Centauri are very bright and quickly in the sky, it is incredibly difficult to detect planets directly.

Dr Howett added: “Probably the planet was either behind the star or was very close to some follow -up. To identify such a world requires a chance and perfect timing element.”

To learn more about this planet and to learn more, astronomers are planning to use NASA’s upcoming instruments such as NASA’s Nancy Grace Roma Space Telescope, which will be released in 2027. This new generation of telescope will have advanced capabilities to detect external planets and examine their atmosphere.

Dr. Howett said: “By analyzing the light spectrum from the planet, we can start to understand which gases it contains and whether conditions cannot support orbit life.

Discovery emphasizes the importance of outer planets (the orbit of planets outside our solar system) as potential habitats by expanding their search for life beyond terrestrial planets. The large months of gas giants may be widespread throughout the galaxy, probably more than soil -sized planets and stable habitats.

While the direct detection of such months remains beyond the existing technology, the potential to survive makes them critical goals for future discoveries.

It will be a challenge that lasts for decades to verify their presence, but the scientific return can be revolutionary-finding life in our close star system, just a cosmic stone throw.
