PATRICK MARMION reviews Lily Allen’s Hedda in Bath: Singer just can’t inject much empathy into this malignant narcissist

Hedda, Ustinov Studio, Bath Theater Royal
A great player can make us care about almost everyone.
However, Lily Allen has to deal with one of the most dodgi characters in all drama in Bath’s last stage attempt in Tiny Ustinov studio.
19th century Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen’s Alfa-Narcisist creation Hedda Gabler is talking about.
In the modernized version of Matthew Dunster, Hedda is a lady who has the air and elegant of a spoiled super model.
Equipped with a modern background – Hedda is now the daughter of a late musician allegedly defrauded by Spotify, and he misses his father and moans that he has all of them – at the same time marrying a sweet but dull professor with a very uncertain thing and thrown into ‘middle -class suburban poverty’.
We are in the fields of deep self -sucking in the Western country (or a character damn ‘somperset’).
A great player can make us care about almost everyone. However, Lily Allen has to deal with one of the most dodgi characters in all drama in Bath’s last stage at Tiny Ustinov studio.
The modernized version of Matthew Dunster is hoping to transfer a West End Transfer with completely subtleties. And Allen’s name will definitely sell tickets
Hedda’s former Jasper (Tom Austen from Grantchester) returns, he does not want to be his partner himself, but he deprived courage to be his own version. And if you can solve it, this show can be for you.
Hedda’s thick drunk husband George (Ciaran Owens) reminiscent of Allen’s recently abandoned real -life former husband David Harbor (Stranger Things).
The difference is that George has a personality bypass and that he is unqualified to marry his ex -lover to this perfect dead dead.
It is not clear why George married Hedda, a very touching woman, but no Feely (anyway).
And still, even though we’re never afraid of what Allen Hedda can do, even though he’s despise an old friend and attack his ex -lover.
Other actors get more traction than Dunster’s hyper realistic dialogue caused by torture inertia.
Austen is leaking Rizz as a chronic intense jasper, who is an expert in the future (although not his own). Julia Chan as his new love (and
Hedda’s old friend) is a vulnerable dependent on the threshold of nerve deterioration.
Imogen Stubbs is an emergency as an emotionally enthusiastic aunt, a stubborn deputy and Sugar Daddy as a soporification to Brendan Coele (Downtton’s Mr. Bates) Hedda.
However, in this theater boutique, you can get rid of playing a malignant character in a non -motivated way, Shaftesbury Boulevard will be a more upright test of fan loyalty
Hedda is not of poor quality, but almost completely completely empathy. No player can get rid of it.
Fortunately, the Najla Andrade Neurotic swamp puts the Bashful Brazilian cleaner who is afraid of everyone’s variable mental state.
In the meantime, Anna Fleischle’s set design embodies the soullessness of the game and a minimalist interior that looks like a luxurious funeral hall with net curtains from the floor to the ceiling.
Dunster’s production hopes to transfer a crew and a West End transfer with completely subtleties. And Allen’s name will definitely sell tickets.
However, in this theater boutique, the place where a non -motivated malignant character can get rid of playing, Shaftesbury Boulevard will be a more upright test of fan loyalty.
