When Air Canada’s flight officials started the strike on Saturday, he said that he had “suspended all operations” while the airline was developing.

Officials, after the contract negotiations reached a dead end this week, a 72 -hour strike reported.

The Union said that the company did not deal with key problems such as wages and unpaid work and that the strike was carried out shortly after midnight Saturday.

Shortly after, the carrier began to delay and cancel some flights. On Friday, he was waiting for the scrap of 500 flights affecting 100,000 passengers.

The strike actually announced that the airline will stop flights to Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge service.

Now the travelers are dealing with the closure of Canada at the height of the summer season, and the government begs both sides to reach an agreement. Here’s what you need to know.

Why does Air Canada cancel flights?

Airline, which is a fleet of 259 aircraft in 64 countries, warned that if labor problems are not solved on Saturday, the “stopping of the flying” will begin. Air Canada’s daily customers, Air Canada Express flights will not be affected.

Nevertheless, a closure can affect 130,000 customers per day, including 25,000 Canadians.

After receiving the strike notification, Air Canada released his 72 -hour locking notification and began to demolish operations, delayed and canceled the flights for three days.

Mark Nasr, the chief operations officer, explained that the airline’s system is complex and that there is nothing “we can start pushing a button or we can stop.

What did the strike lead?

The Canadian Public Employees Association (CUPE), representing the 10,000 Air Canada official, claimed that he has been negotiating in good faith with the airway for more than eight months.

The airline said that recently offered a 38% increase in total compensation to flight officials for four years and offered a 25% increase in the first year.

However, the union said that the proposal was “under the inflation, below the market value, below the minimum wage”, and that the flight officials would leave unpaid for several hours of work, including waiting for the airports before flights or guiding the boarding process.

They said that the wages did not keep up with inflation, so that Air Canada’s wage increase was “actually a wage deduction”.

Almost all of the participants – 99.7% – voted to strike at the beginning of this month. Meanwhile, the company asked the government to intervene.

Government representatives have already facilitated some negotiations, but the carrier went further and asked Canada to apply to the Business Minister Patty Hajdu to bind the issue.

How did the government answer?

At the beginning of this week, Air Canada suggested that a third party took a step to develop an agreement called “binding arbitration”, but the union rejected it.

Later, he asked the government to force parties to force binding fortifications by pointing to the latest government interventions in railway, ports and other negotiations.

In the binding arbitration, an independent third party determines the conditions of a contract in a legally applicable agreement.

In a statement on Friday, the Union demanded that Hajdu did not intervene and instead of “the parties not allow them to make a decision through free and fair negotiations without unnecessary intervention”.

The only answer for flight officials is that both sides return to the table.

If the company and the Hajdu side, the Board typically accepted these demands, but after working for a few days, the Canada’s Industrial Relations Board would ask for binding arbitration to protect the economy.

There is also pressure from other parts of Canada. While the trade -established government called for a government intervention, Newfoundland and Labrador state published a statement that describes the effect of a strike as a “disaster” for the tourism industry in the summer season.

How long will the strike take?

This is uncertain.

When Air Canada pilots go on strike for 13 days in September 1998, the grounding of more than 600 daily flights of the carrier forced passengers and the cost of $ 133 million ($ 71 million $ 71 million) before the negotiation agreement was reached.

In recent years, the Federal Government has taken steps by blocking strikes and agreements by Air Canada employees during business disputes.

The union said the arbitration will stop the first strike by the carrier since 1985.

What to do if your flight is canceled?

Air Canada said that if there is a change at the planned departure time of the flight, the passengers will inform the passengers.

As of Saturday, Air Canada strongly recommended that passengers should not go to the airport unless he bought tickets in other airlines.

The airline said that customers whose flights are canceled will be informed and will receive full refund. The company also made arrangements with other Canadian and foreign carriers to provide alternative travel options to customers.

If a round trip, if the passengers reach the target, return flights will not be canceled automatically.

These reservations can be canceled without charge.
