According to PeopleGoncalves met Vitale while she was covering the case of his murdered sister and fellow students Madison Mogen, Ethan Chapin and Xana Kernodle, who were stabbed to death in an off-campus home in November 2022.

In an interview with NewsNationVItale noted she had previously interviewed the Goncalves family before Kohlberger’s arrest but hadn’t met her fiancé until a year later when Kaylee and Steven’s father, Steve, contacted her about doing a documentary.

Steve invited VItale to lunch while she was filming the demolition of the house where the killings took place. Steve’s son, Steven, also attended the lunch, said Vitale.

“But we actually didn’t start dating until almost even a year after that,” Vitale told NewsNation. “We were friends first, and then I invited him to — I was filming a documentary with NBC — and I wanted Steven to be a part of it, and it was on set where we bonded.”

The two became best friends and bonded while on set. On the News Nation show, Banfieldthe two announced their engagement.

While he suffered a tragic loss with the death of his sister, Steven said the “bright spot” from the case was meeting Vitale.

“I do have my partner for the rest of my life and I’ll hold on to that,” he said.

Vitale said she looks forward to building a life with Steven and would “like to homestead, get some chickens, raise a family together.”
