Russia looks to update nuclear program amid ‘colossal threats’ from West

Russia’s best nuclear official Moscow this week is facing “tremendous threats” and should update his nuclear abilities.

“The current geopolitical situation is a tremendous threat to the existence of our country,” Rosatom Alexei Likhachav, General Manager of State Atomic Energy Company, without direct naming where the main nuclear threat of Russia came from.

According to the Russian state news agency RIA, “Therefore, the nuclear shield, which is also a sword, is a guarantee of our sovereignty.” He continued: “Today we understand that the nuclear shield should only be developed in the coming years.”

Comments arrived shortly after a week after Russian President Vladimir Putin and President Donald Trump met with the Kremlin chief for the first time since Russia occupied Ukraine in 2022.

Although Trump and Putin seemed positive after the talks, it seemed to have been performed very little at the meeting, and the hope surrounding a Russian-Ukraine ceasefire seemed to decrease as the week progressed.

It is unclear why Likhachav is currently publishing comments about Russia’s nuclear program and did not explain what kind of updates he would want to make to Moscow’s “Kalkan” program.

Earlier this year, Trump issued similar comments in May this year, inspired by Israel’s “Iron Dome” defense system and announced his plans to improve the “Golden Dome” missile defense system, which is expected to cost at least $ 175 billion.

Although security experts show alarm in the case of increased nuclear development of China, Russia and the US continue to have 90% of the world’s nuclear arsenal.

China’s growing nuclear arsenal aims to break alliances and to dominate Asia,

Moscow, according to the Arms Control Association, continues to hold about 4,400 nuclear war titles “strategically” strategically deployed, and has more than 3,700 war titles in US stocks.

Although nuclear disarmament is an international target that stands after the end of the Cold War, the relations between Washington and Moscow, the orbit of this policy, have once again been suspected that Putin’s war in Ukraine and Chinese President Xi Jinping has once again become precarious.

The new starting treaty continues to be the only binary nuclear weapon control agreement between the US and Russia, and although it was extended in 2021, it will end in February 2026. The future of Moscow’s first agreement in 2010 remains unclear because it paused the participation of Moscow in 2023.

Putin said that this suspension means that it will continue to comply with the stock limits under the treaty, but would not allow the US to continue.
