WA’s smart cameras to start fining drivers after seven-month caution period
WA drivers will soon be fined if they are caught by new security cameras of the state.
Six cameras with trailer and fixed motorway cameras will begin to violate as of October 8 after a seven -month entry period in which drivers are warned.
The cameras take two children in the passenger seat without a seat belt.
Since February, more than 275,000 mobile phones, seat belts and acceleration crimes have been issued and more than 60,000 notifications have been published.
The collected data showed that the cameras lead to driver behavioral changes, that mobile phone crimes dropped by about 60 percent in the trailer cameras and the seat belt crimes on fixed cameras fell by 41 percent.
Deputy Minister of Transport, Jessica Stojkovski, said the new technology will lead to a less dangerous driver on the road.
“We can help prevent tragedies by wearing a seat belt and lifting the phones,” he said.
