Vanuatu pact fate uncertain as PM lands in Pacific

9 September 2025 13:29 | News

Anthony Albanese came to Vanuatu for significant negotiations with the Pacific nation on a long -awaited security and economic agreement.

A Guard of Honor greeted the Prime Minister on Tuesday while he arrived at Vila Port to meet with his counterpart Jotham Napat.

Although there is expectations, the Nakamal Security Pact of $ 500 million will be signed after months of negotiation.

“I don’t expect it to be signed today, but what we’re going to do today is to make this conversation,” he said before leaving Australia.

“We have committed to work to raise our relationship.

“There are still some things to do, but we make good progress.”

The first stop of Albania will be the State House, where he will call for courtesy to Vanuatu President Nikenike Vurobaravu.

Later, he will have a dual meeting with his counterpart.

Mr. Napat will meet for the first time in person since he took office in February.

The agreement is believed to have an important security element, but the details were not published.

This can focus on reducing the existence of policing in Vanuatu, similar to Australia’s agreement with the Solomon Islands of Australia to reduce Chinese officers in exchange for budget aid and expand the local police force in exchange for budget aid.

Despite the delay of signing the agreement, Mr. Albanese said he was sure of a breakthrough in the talks.

Uz We want to go into good -intentioned discussions, and a way to do it, of course, not only by talking on the phone, but to make a face -to -face discussion, ”he said.

“What we’re looking for is to improve the relationship, to take advantage of the common prosperity.”

Mr. Albania’s first visit to Vanuatu as Prime Minister.

A previous security agreement with Vanuatu in 2022 was never approved by the country’s parliament due to lack of consultation and whether Vanuatu was consistent with the philosophy of alignment in foreign policy.

China’s ambitions to win a security base, including the risk of establishing a military asset in the Pacific, have increased since Beijing made a security agreement with Solomon Islands in 2022.

Vanuatu, as part of the Nakamal Agreement negotiations, had pressured for a visa -free trip to Australia, but Napat said it would be discussed in a follow -up agreement when a first agreement was decided in August.

The Prime Minister’s visit to Vanuatu comes in front of Albania, who traveled to Solomon Islands to discuss with other leaders in the Pacific Islands Forum.
