Old AFL referee brownlow appears in court after the medal betting probe

A former AFL referee and the other three men were accused of various crimes at the Melbourne Magistrate Criminal Court for the first time on Thursday morning as part of a sports integrity investigation of suspicious bets in the number of former Brownlow medals.
In November 2022, former AFL referee Michael Pell was arrested after allegedly leaking the Brownlow medal votes, one of the 2022 season in one of the most serious integrity scandals to hit the league.
The investigation was later expanded to 2021 season, when Pell was an emergency referee.

On Thursday, Pell and three partners were accused of William Forte, Mitch Lucas and Donovan Pell, Melbourne Magistrate Criminal Court, for a file hearing accused of 102 crimes.
Ford is facing six accusations, including the use of corrupt behavior information for Michael Pell’s 2021 Brownlow Medal to bet to bet and get financial advantage through deception and to obtain financial advantage.
The court was told that the total fraud made by the four was “about $ 300,000”.

Magistrates’ Judge Brett Sonnet said that the accusations were serious and that he placed four men on bail provided that he did not leave Australia.
All four men will return to court for a commitment hearing on 22 October. The case can potentially be transferred to the district court.

“I have experienced some traumatic injuries in the past, so smaller ones – less angry injuries – when you are as frustrating as possible, you find ways to put a plan in front of you and move forward very quickly,” he said.
“Perspective plays a big role. I have priorities that I can be injured even because I have children, but I still can’t walk around.
“I have to continue with this and I feel good by the club. They put me in a good place to pursue it.”
