‘Crocodile’ defence pact ready to be signed in PNG

17 September 2025 03:30 | News

If Australia can raise a core, Papua is ready to sign a turning point with the new Guinea and the ministers are scattered to their voters to celebrate 50 years of independence.

The two countries promise to take each other’s backs under the Pukpuk Treaty bearing the name of Pidgin Crocodile.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese hopes to conclude and sign the new agreement on Wednesday for the Golden Jubilee celebrations this week.

In his statement to journalists on Tuesday, he said that the PNG cabinet had come together to give final approval on Monday night, but did not have seeds because some ministers returned to the election zones for independence celebrations.

However, he expected his counterpart James Marape to almost solve the process through the cabinet.

In Canberra, Pact won support from the opposition leader Sussan Ley.

“Papua will bring a transformation of our mutual partnership by Papua New Guinea and Australia – the foundation of deeper ties for the next fifty years,” he said.

The Treaty will lead to the close integration of the defense forces of the two countries and if both countries are attacked, they will trigger their obligations for mutual support.

Mr. Albania, PNG’nin attacked and Australia will lean back and follow, dates and close bonds, “he said.

Marape said, “My army has a moral obligation to have a level where I can have the capacity to defend every child, Papua Yeni Guinea.

The Landmark Agreement will allow PNG citizens to serve Australia’s defense power for the same fee and start a way for citizenship.

PNG Defense Minister Billy Joseph said on Monday that the agreement was a “mutual defense agreement” that would allow nations to work together to defend each other’s regions.

Probably the agreement will be seen with a more cynical eye in the Pacific, and many countries have not been well thrown into the militarization of the region.

Mr. Albanian’s agreement in the Pacific, a turning point with the Tuvaler, was a central principle of his government’s foreign policy, including a climate agreement and Nauru and the immigrant dumping agreement.

He also makes a security agreement with Fiji, one of the only three Pacific countries to have a defense power with PNG and Tonga.

In recent years, Australia has competed with China to make two melaanesian nation – Solomon Islands and Vanuatu – security pacts with warmer ties.

The greens also raised concerns about the Pukpuk Treaty, including the degree of integration between the two forces.

“For example, if there is a return to the conflict in Bougainville, what could be the role of Australia?” Defense spokesman David Shoebridge asked.

“Does it mean that they follow us to a US war or by military bases?

“It is a very suspicious way to suck the PNG’s army to the Australian Defense Force and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of independence.”

As a gift to mark gold jubileers, Australia will help PNG to create a new ministry wing in Parliament.
