Bali to block new hotels and restaurants after deadly flooding raises questions about mass tourism | Bali

After killing at least 18 people of the latest flash floods, Indonesia will prohibit the construction of new hotels and restaurants built on the popular facility island and agricultural lands built on the popular facility island.
After the island has experienced the most severe flood for more than a decade, the state of emergency was declared in Bali on September 10th.
The flood, which was triggered by heavy rainfall, caused great damage to homes, public facilities and infrastructure and affected thousands of thousands of people around Denpasar and its surroundings.
Environmental activists have long given alerts about the effects of mass tourism on the island for a long time and said that more strict controls will reduce risks caused by floods and other natural disasters to prevent land transformation.
Following the floods, Bali Governor Wayan Koster said that new rules were published this week.
“Since this year, yes, there is already an instruction to the mayors of all districts and mayors in Bali,” he said.
Indonesia State News Agency Antara’nın quoted, “after taking the floods, hotels, restaurants or other facilities in productive lands, especially for the rice fields will not be given more to ensure that more permission,” he said.
“As of this year, the land transformation ban will be compatible with Bali’s 100 -year plan. No productive land cannot be transformed into commercial facilities.”
Famous for its lush, green rice paddy and striking beaches, the “Island of the gods”, with local people and tourists, has undergone a rapid change that complained about traffic, pollution and badly acted with the hotel and holiday villages that exceed the island.
Last year, Indonesia said that it would place a moratorium in new hotels between the fear of excessive development, but the plan could not emerge. New regulations are expected to enter into force by the end of 2025.
The movement follows Indonesia’s meteorology and climate agency this year, a deteriorating waste crisis that aggravates water raids in various regions, including the potential of excessive rain season and Bali.
The flood is typically common in the wet season, which is typically from September to March.
However, scientists say that the climate crisis intensifies the rain season, bringing more heavy rainfall and more frequent flash floods. It is believed that excessive development and widespread forests worsens the effect of the flood.
Indonesian Environment Minister Hanif Faisal Nurofiq said that after the floods, the new regulations are an important step for the island.
“This is also very important for Bali’s tourism, because the latest floods attracted serious attention,” he said.
“Actually, I told the governor that I hoped to stop the land transformations in Bali last week. This is extremely important.”
Excessive rainfall is more common and intense in most people due to human -induced climate deterioration. Especially in EuropeMost of Asia, Central and Eastern North America and parts of South America, Africa and Australia.
This is because the warmer air can hold more water vapor. The flood is probably more often and severe in these places, but it is also affected by human factors such as the presence of flood defenses and the presence of land use.
