While Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum was holding a press conference on Friday, a powerful earthquake struck the southern and central parts of the country. As Claudia was making her first speech for the New Year 2026, seismic alarms blared loudly, interrupting her speech and sending shockwaves through the meeting.
According to Mexico’s national seismological agency, the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.5 and its epicenter was the town of San Marcos in the southern state of Guerrero, near the Pacific coast resort town of Acapulco. The earthquake struck 2.5 miles north-northwest of Rancho Viejo, Guerrero, at a depth of 21.7 miles (35 kilometers), in the mountains about 92 miles northeast of Acapulco, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
However, after a while, Sheinbaum continued the press conference and said that he had evaluated the situation from Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado, who informed him that no serious damage had been reported so far. When the ground shook after the earthquake tremors, residents and tourists in Mexico City and Acapulco immediately ran to the streets.
According to the state’s civil defense agency, several landslides have occurred around Acapulco and on other highways in the state. José Raymundo Díaz Taboada, a doctor and human rights activist who lives on one of the peaks surrounding Acapulco, said he first heard a loud rumbling sound and all the dogs in the neighborhood started barking at the same time.
“At that moment, the seismic alarm went off on my mobile phone and then a strong shaking started to be felt along with a lot of noise,” he said. He said the shaking was milder than previous quakes and that he was packing a backpack to be ready to go while aftershocks continued.
