A vicious kick to the head left the Socceroos star bloodied as Australia took on Paraguay in a tense World Cup clash with everything on the line.

With the place in the knockout stage hanging in the balance, the match was stopped for several minutes in the first half when a Paraguayan boot caught Connor Metcalfe’s head high during a desperate challenge.

As the star midfielder hit the ground, his Paraguayan opponent’s boot accidentally hit his face, causing Metcalfe to clutch his head in pain.

While his teammates immediately rushed to his aid, replays showed blood flowing from a deep cut when medical personnel arrived to help.

The blow stunned fans and players alike; The Australian left was visibly shaken before receiving a lengthy treatment.

When Metcalfe returned to the field his head was heavily bandaged.

“That would definitely hurt,” Socceroos great Luke Wilkshire said on SBS.
