Mayor: “An unthinkable loss” Zohran Mamdani he said in a post on X on Wednesday. “I am grateful to the hospital staff and the NYPD for their continued work to find those responsible for this heinous murder. We cannot accept this violence as normal. Too many families have suffered this pain.”
At the press conference, Mamdani expressed his condolences to the family and reminded citizens that gun violence, especially gun violence that claims the lives of young people, is not normal in New York.
“There are no words that can heal the heartbreak this family is feeling right now, no statement strong enough to take away the pain they have had to carry, no embrace wide enough to heal the void that has opened in their lives,” Mamdani said. “The fact that our city is not the first family to experience this pain deepens this sadness. Too many children did not grow up to be adults. Too many parents had to bury the ones they loved most.”
“We cannot become numb to this pain. And today is a devastating reminder of how much work still needs to be done to combat gun violence across the city,” he added.
In the footage captured on security cameras, two people were seen running away on a motorcycle shortly after the incident. A man on the back of a moped is seen firing two shots towards a corner where children and a few adults lived. While the suspects were fleeing the scene, the motorcycle crashed into an oncoming car and the man behind the motorcycle fell out of the vehicle without shoes.
The rear passenger is in custody in connection with an unrelated investigation. Investigators are looking into whether he is connected to the shooting. The driver of the moped is still at large and the New York Police Department is continuing an extensive search to capture him.
