Teen who killed Vyleen White to be sentenced

The teenager who fatally stabbed an elderly woman in front of a young girl in Queensland will learn his fate on Thursday when the Chief Justice decides whether the brutal attack deserves a harsher sentence.

White’s family, including her husband Victor and their daughter, told the court on Wednesday morning how her death had disturbed them and that they were struggling with the devastation of losing her.

His death sent shockwaves through the community and led to anger towards young offenders as the LNP pushed for tougher sentences for young offenders.

At the start of the teenager’s sentencing on Wednesday, the court heard a teenage girl saw White being stabbed and ran to get help.

“I was so scared when I saw the man,” Crown Prosecutor Chris Cook said on behalf of the girl. “From now on, sometimes I feel unsafe when I go there… Sometimes I have trouble falling asleep, I worry that I will have bad dreams.”

The boy, then 16, had been with a group of teenagers drinking near the mall earlier in the day, Cook said. The man was said to have left alone, holding a knife and wearing a surgical mask covering his face, the court heard.

Cook said the teen entered the mall parking lot with the intention of stealing a car.
