Mamandi it was officially He was sworn in just after midnight at the decommissioned subway station beneath City Hall, swearing on the Quran and becoming the city’s first Muslim mayor.

Mamdani praised Sanders after he was publicly sworn in and promised that he would be the mayor for all New Yorkers after a highly contentious campaign.

“I promise you this: If you are a New Yorker, I am your mayor. Whether we agree or not, I will protect you, I will celebrate with you, I will mourn with you, and I will never, not for a moment, hide from you,” Mamdani told the assembled crowd at the inauguration.

I thank the workers and movement leaders who are here today, the activists and elected officials who will return to fight for New Yorkers at the conclusion of this ceremony, and the artists who have given us their talents. Thank you Governor Hochul. We also thank Mayor Adams, the son of Brownsville, Dorothy, who rose from washing dishes to the highest position in our city, for being here. He and I had our differences of opinion, too, but I will always be impressed that he chose me as the mayoral candidate he would most want to be stuck in an elevator with.

I would like to thank two great people whom I have the privilege of representing in Congress as a member of the Assembly: Nydia Velazquez and our incredible keynote speaker, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. You paved the way for this moment. Thank you to the man whose leadership I try to emulate the most and to whom I am grateful for being sworn in today, Senator Bernie Sanders. Thank you to my teams, from assembly to campaign to transition, and now to the team I am thrilled to lead from City Hall. Thank you to my mom and dad, my mom and dad.

Sanders also addressed the crowd and later led them with the slogan “Tax the rich.”
